Direct Feeding of the Black Hole at the Galactic Center with Radial Gas Streams from Close-In Stellar Winds

چکیده
We show that the recently-discovered orbits of massive stars with closest approach of ∼ 10 Schwarzschild radii from Sgr A* , allow winds from these stars to provide the required mass deposition rate near the black hole horizon. The observed luminosity of Sgr A* does not require viscous transport of angular momentum, as long as the total wind mass loss rate reaches ∼ 10M⊙ yr −1 from the close-in stars. The specific orbits of the nearest stars should cause modulation of the radio and infrared flux from Sgr A* on a timescale of years in a predictable fashion.

The Formation of Broad Line Clouds in the Accretion Shocks of Active Galactic Nuclei
Recent work on the gas dynamics in the Galactic Center has improved our understanding of the accretion processes in galactic nuclei, particularly with regard to properties such as the specific angular momentum distribution, density, and temperature of the inflowing plasma. With the appropriate extrapolation of the physical conditions, this information can be valuable in trying to determine the ...
متن کاملColliding Winds in the Stellar Core at the Galactic Center: Some Implications
We point out that a high number density of stars in the core of a dense star cluster such as the central stellar cluster at the Galactic center, where many stars possess strong stellar winds, should result in collisions of those winds. The wind collisions in the dense stellar core at the Galactic center would result in production of strong X-ray flares with the rate of ∼ 10 (Nw/10) yr and durat...
متن کاملHard X-rays from the Galactic Nucleus: Present and Future Observations
In spite of increasing evidences of the presence of a massive Black Hole at the Galactic Center, its radio counterpart, Sgr A, shows little activity at high energies, and recent models involving energy advection (ADAF) have been proposed to explain this difficulty. We present results on the hard X-ray emission from the galactic central square degree obtained from the SIGMA/GRANAT 1990-1997 surv...

Winds from massive stars supply ≈ 10 −3 M ⊙ yr −1 of gas to the central parsec of the Galactic Center. Spherically symmetric hydrodynamic calculations show that ≈ 1% of this gas, or ≈ 10 −5 M ⊙ yr −1 , flows in towards the central massive black hole Sgr A*; the remaining gas, ≈ 10 −3 M ⊙ yr −1 , is thermally driven out of the central star cluster in a wind. This dynamical model accounts for the...
متن کاملStellar Gas Flows Into A Dark Cluster Potential At The Galactic Center
The evidence for the presence of a concentration of dark matter at the Galactic center is now very compelling. There is no question that the stellar and gas kinematics within ≈ 0.01 pc is dominated by under-luminous matter in the form of either a massive black hole, a highly condensed distribution of stellar remnants, or a more exotic source of gravity. The unique, compact radio source Sgr A* a...
